Knowing God Intimately

Knowing God intimately starts with knowing that He wants to speak to us. The Bible implores us to be silent and listen for His voice.

But not only to be silent, that certainly has a time and a place, but to talk with Him. That is the ultimate in conversations. I believe that above all we must make the Holy Spirit our best friend. And in order to do that we must sit down and talk to Him. Not just occasionally, but daily. It’s important. We maintain friendships by keeping in touch.

The same has to be with the Holy Spirit. (Remember that God is a trinity – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit was sent to us as the “go-between” when Jesus, the Son ascended into Heaven.) I believe that He has always talked to us. It’s just that we haven’t always heard. We go deaf by following the flesh, by following the world’s way. That puts putty in our spiritual ears. The more we deal with earthly things, the more putty gets shoved into our spiritual ear canal. That is what the devil wants. It is easily remedied, though. By prayer and speaking God’s Word. Daily. This is knowing God intimately.

You train yourself to listen for His voice. And when you hear it you know. Walking in the Spirit means hearing His voice, whenever He talks to us. And He’ll talk to us as often as needed, whether we hear or not. But the thing we should strive for is to hear – always. This is knowing God intimately.

It started with me with little feelings. I knew that I knew. Then it became a voice that I distinguished as different from my mind’s voice. Sometimes, I felt like He was tapping me on my shoulder, as if to say, “Tune in and listen to me.” I’ve had true face to face conversations with Him. How wonderful and uplifting it is. And I learned that He wants to have conversations with me. How does it start, you ask? Simple, I was having trouble falling asleep one night. (And I call that a blessing in disguise).

Yes, the house was quiet, my husband was sawing logs and I laid there, thinking. I’m sure that demons like to pounce on a person then they have their guard down. I believe that’s how nightmares are born. Anyhow, that’s a whole other article. I would lay there and think, about bad memories. Replaying them, going over and mulling them in my mind. As time progressed, I became more agitated. Then I felt the tapping on my spiritual should. “Talk to me,” He whispered. I was shaken and came to realize that knowing God intimately was about to happen to me!

This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person's failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.
John 3:16 (The Message Bible)

Psalm 91

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.

2 I will say [b] of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust."

3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence.

4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day,

6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.

7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.

8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.

9 If you make the Most High your dwelling— even the LORD, who is my refuge-

10 then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent.

11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways;

12 they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

13 You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent.

14 "Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.

15 He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.

16 With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."
